Frequently Asked Questions

Who can tryout for the Sweethearts?

Any 8th-11th grade student who will be attending WHS for the 2024-2025 school year.

Is there a set number of dancers who make the team?

There is no maximum or minimum number of dancers selected for the team each year. The number of dancers selected for the 2024-2025 team will be determined by the natural break in the judges scores.

In years past, the team has been as small as 17 members and as large as 60 members. The team size truly depends on the quality of talent from year to year.

What is the time commitment?

This is a full year commitment as the Sweethearts have various performances and appearances throughout the year. Individuals who are considering trying out should be aware of the weekly practices before and after school, occasional weekend events, and dedication required to be a Sweetheart.

What can I do to prepare for tryouts?

We offer three tryout prep clinics to teach the technique that will be in the tryout routine, and provide candidates the opportunity to learn our style(s). Prep clinic are not mandatory.

If you can't attend a prep clinic class, we highly recommend taking recreational dance classes at local studios in the weeks leading up to tryouts. Our current team members have taken classes at LSJ Dance, Backstage Dance Studio, MC Dance, Extreme Performing Arts Center, and Dance Dynamics.

What grades to I have to have to be on the team?

Candidates must be passing all of their classes in order to tryout. Due to the UIL No Pass No Play rule, Sweethearts are held to a higher academic standard in order to participate.

What if I have a referral, can I still tryout?

As ambassadors for our campus, district, and community it is important that our Sweethearts obey our school policies and are model students. Therefore, candidates must have no discipline referrals resulting in In School Suspension (ISS), Out of School Suspension (OSS), or expulsion for the 2023-2024 school year.
